THE LAPEL CLIP
This challenging piece was designed for our loyal customer who also commissioned The Pen and The Travel Cutlery Set. The lapel clip incorporates materials, from both inherited jewellery and from pieces that he no longer wore- with the larger center stone being one that he had inherited from his granny. I was given complete creative liberty, the only brief given being that the customer wanted a lapel pin; however, it quickly became clear that there were too many stones to make a traditional style pin, meaning I had to think unconventionally with my design concepts.
It was a very challenging piece to design and create due to the sheer amount and varying sizes of the diamonds it incorporates- 59 in total! Once the design concept was finalised, the precise details of how to make it functional was the next challenge. The main problems I had to overcome were balancing the weight of the piece in order to make it wearable, as well as figuring out how to affix it securely to a lapel.
Most of the clip is made from recycled platinum from the customer’s unwanted jewellery, however 18ct yellow pin gold was used for the backing section as its rigidity allows it to be thinner, thus keeping the weight down. The process of creating the clasp involved me hand-making miniature springs and gold screws, in order for the mechanism to work seamlessly.
